The treatise says: "As stated previously... by what are they produced?" Summarizing the preceding and introducing what follows. The main text of this chapter is divided into four parts: first, clarifying the essence of karma; second, clarifying moral discipline and so forth; third, clarifying various karmas in the sūtras; fourth, miscellaneous clarifications on various karmas. Within clarifying the essence of karma: first, four and a half verses clarify the intrinsic nature of karma; second, one and a half verses clarify the great elements that create it; third, two verses clarify the distinctions of appropriated elements; fourth, one verse provides analytical distinctions; fifth, one and a half verses clarify the four kinds of wholesome actions, etc.; sixth, three verses clarify the two origins. Within clarifying the intrinsic nature of karma, the upper line of the first verse answers the preceding question; the next line divides into two karmas; the lower two lines divide into three karmas; the next half-verse divides bodily and vocal action to form five karmas; the next two and a half verses establish the essence of unmanifest action; and the final half-verse clarifies the essence of non-revelation. Within the first text, it first summarizes the preceding question to introduce the topic, and then cites the verse to answer. This is the first part of the text.
