Treatise: "Some hold that when a flame perishes, it is by the power of dharma and adharma." This is the assertion of a divergent Vaiśeṣika master. Dharma and adharma are subsumed under the category of quality (guṇa). What is beneficial to human beings is called dharma; what is unbeneficial to human beings is called adharma. By the power of these two, dharmas are born and dharmas perish. For example, in a dark room there is a bright lamp: with regard to the user, the lamp's presence is beneficial, which is dharma producing it; the lamp's extinguishing is unbeneficial, which is adharma destroying it. With regard to a thief, the lamp's presence is unbeneficial, which is adharma producing it; the lamp's extinguishing is beneficial, which is dharma destroying it.
