16.16

The Śāstra says: "Freeing oneself from the defilement of the desire realm […] because of unwholesome karma"—this one grade of intention abandons two karmas. Abandoning a part of the dark, it abandons the mixed karma in its entirety; abandoning the dark is abandonment through intrinsic nature and through object of cognition, whereas abandoning the bright is abandonment only through object of cognition. Abandonment through intrinsic nature is abandoned grade by grade, whereas abandonment through object of cognition is abandoned at the ninth grade.
