The passage of the śāstra from "When nine operate simultaneously" up to "at the time when it is currently present" explains the simultaneous operation of nine. The wholesome five consciousnesses [with two] and the bhikṣu vows of seven form one variety of nine. When, relying on the knowledge of exhaustion (kṣayajñāna) and the knowledge of non-arising (anutpādajñāna) of the formless [realm], one obtains the bhikṣu vows: mental wholesomeness has two (excluding right view), and the bhikṣu vows have seven; this is the second variety of nine. In accordance with this, right when receiving the vows one may attain the stage of the non-learner (aśaikṣa). Or, when the knowledge of exhaustion and the knowledge of non-arising subsumed under dhyāna are currently present, at that time the mind has two, and the vows concurrent with the path (mārgasahabhū-saṃvara) have seven; this is the third variety of nine.
