The Śāstra says: "If it were not so, the nature of past and future could not be established": the Sautrāntika master says: If one does not explain, as I do, that 'having once existed' is called 'existing' and 'bound to exist' is called 'existing', and instead establishes, as the Sarvāstivādins do, that the three times have substances, then the nature of past and future could not be established, because both would equally have substance.
