On the Śāstra's statement: "All the rest […] are able to bind this matter": this explains the defilements possessing a common characteristic. "Views, doubt, and ignorance": ignorance refers to unshared ignorance; associated ignorance is explained according to that with which it is associated. These views, doubt, and so forth throughout the past and future universally bind [dharmas of] all three time periods, while in the present it is indefinite. Because of this, both past and future are universal; this is because they run universally across the three time periods. Now, summarizing further: with greed and so forth associated with the mental consciousness in the future, whether they arise or do not arise, they are all universal, because they run universally across the three time periods; in the past and present, it is indefinite. Greed and so forth associated with the five consciousnesses are universal only when not arising in the future, because they run universally across the three time periods; in the past, present, and when arising, they are definitely not universal. Defilements possessing a common characteristic are all universal in the past and future, because they run universally across the three time periods; in the present, it is indefinite. None of these are spoken of as universal or non-universal with respect to their own objective cognitive spheres.
