The commentary states: "Attaining parinirvāṇa without exertion means … because of having the path of swift progress," which explains attaining parinirvāṇa without exertion (anabhisaṃskāra-parinirvāyin). Although lacking swift progress is the same as with exertion, because of lacking diligent cultivation, it is placed after with exertion. The Nyāyānusāra states: "If a class previously in the desire realm, relying on the power of samādhi with unremitting preparation, severed the five lower fetters and became non-returners, and later, having been born in the form realm for a long time, are still able to advance and cultivate the previous kind of path to become arhats, they are called attaining parinirvāṇa with exertion. Those who attain parinirvāṇa without exertion are the opposite of this."
