'Exposition of Knowledge': Discernment (prajñā) that reaches a definitive resolution regarding what has previously been observed is called 'knowledge' (jñāna). Alternatively, when the inclination to seek observation of an object has ceased, and the preparatory application has become relaxed, it is called 'knowledge'. The types of knowledge vary, but do not exceed ten kinds; this chapter explains them at length, hence it is called the 'Exposition'. Knowledge is the path itself, and the path is the cause of cessation; the preceding chapter on the Noble Ones explained the persons accomplished through the path. This chapter explains knowledge, setting forth the path that forms the cause for such persons; the fruit comes first and the cause follows, and therefore knowledge is explained here.
