On the Śāstra's: "Now we should question them ... consciousness cognising is also like this": The author of the Śāstra first refutes their simile, and by analogy with the simile refutes the doctrine. A two-pronged interrogation: What is Devadatta? If he is a real self, this was refuted earlier. If he is a nominal person, his substance is not a single thing, because the name Devadatta is nominally designated upon the continuum of conditioned forces of Devadatta. This refutes the simile. Just as Devadatta can walk, consciousness cognising is also like this: this refutes the doctrine by analogy.
