On the statement: 'The Śāstra says: up to more subtle than this,' this explains 'atomic cluster' in the verse. A paramāṇu is not an aggregation; a subtle atom (aṇu) consists of seven paramāṇus, and among aggregated matter, the atomic cluster is the most subtle. This passage also shows that paramāṇus of form and so on gather with their own kind to form an atomic cluster. Another explanation: it agrees with the *Nyāyānusāra*. The *Nyāyānusāra* says: 'Because the absolute minimum of matter has no further divisions, it is designated "absolute minimum." Just as a single kṣaṇa is called the minimum of time and cannot be further split into half a kṣaṇa, so the mutual aggregation of many subtle atoms that are definitely inseparable is called an atomic cluster.' According to this treatise text, 'subtle' refers to the paramāṇu, and 'cluster' refers to the eight or nine paramāṇus and so forth. Of the two interpretations, the latter is superior.
