[On] the treatise's: 'Regarding the arising of the absorption of cessation ... becomes liberated in both respects': this is the answer. The Vibhāṣā, fascicle 153, says: 'Why is the World-Honoured One called liberated in both respects as soon as the knowledge of exhaustion (kṣayajñāna) arises? Answer: Because he has already attained the minds entering and emerging from that absorption, he is called liberated in both respects, not because he has attained the entity of the absorption. It is precisely due to this reason that it is said to be attained through freedom from passion, because at a later time it arises without requiring preparatory application.'
