釋曰：地謂顯形色者，釋假地也。地謂顯形色，色處為體，謂青等地依顯色立，長短等地依形色立。此非實地，實地是堅，唯身根得，非眼根見。於顯形色假立地名，是色處攝，眼所見也。

The commentary states: 'Earth refers to colour and shape form' explains nominal earth. Earth refers to colour and shape form, taking the sense-base of form (rūpāyatana) as its essence; that is, blue earth and so forth are designated on the basis of colour form, while long, short earth and so forth are designated on the basis of shape form. This is not real earth; real earth is solidity, which is apprehended only by the body faculty and not seen by the eye faculty. Nominally establishing the name 'earth' on colour and shape form belongs to the sense-base of form and is seen by the eye.
