從此大文第三，明數開合。於中有二：一明數合、二明數開。且初第一明數合者，論云：「眼、耳、鼻三處各有二，何緣界體非二十一？」頌曰：

From here, the third major section clarifies the expansion and contraction of their numbers. There are two parts within this: first, clarifying the contraction of number; second, clarifying the expansion of number. First, regarding the clarification of the contraction of number, the treatise says: 'The three āyatanas of eye, ear, and nose each have two; for what reason are the entities of the dhātus not twenty-one?'
