“Suffering” (duḥkha) is the truth of suffering. Because defiled dharmas of the three realms run contrary to the minds of the noble ones, they are collectively called “suffering.” It is not the suffering of affliction that is painful feeling, because that painful feeling exists only in the desire realm. “Origin” (samudaya) is the truth of origin: because defiled dharmas gather and produce suffering, they are called “origin.” “The mundane” (loka) has the meaning of being destructible. Defiled dharmas have two kinds of destruction: first, destruction by the four characteristics [of conditioned phenomena]; second, destruction by antidotes. Hence they are called “the mundane.” Although the uncontaminated truth of the path is destroyed by the four characteristics, it lacks the second, destruction by antidotes, so it is not called “the mundane.”
