'Flowing continuously' clarifies the characteristic of the unmanifest. 'Conforming' (sui) means conforming, because its nature is similar. 'Flowing' (liu) means coursing on, because it arises in continuity. Therefore the treatise says: 'A similar continuity is called flowing continuously (similarity is called conforming; continuity is called flowing).' 'Pure or impure' brings out the essence of the unmanifest. The unmanifest is exclusively wholesome or unwholesome and does not extend to the indeterminate nature; this is called pure or impure.
