大種所造性者，簡法也，為簡諸得。諸得者，雖復通四位，行相似相續濫無表相，然得非是大種所造，簡諸得故，是故復言大種所造，謂無表色大種所造故。造者因義，因有五因：一生因、二依因、三立、四持、五養。此後當說。

'Having the nature of being produced by the great elements' serves to differentiate phenomena; it is in order to exclude the acquisitions (prāpti). As for the acquisitions, although they also extend through the four states and their functioning is similar and continuous, confusing them with the characteristics of the unmanifest, nevertheless acquisition is not produced by the great elements. In order to exclude acquisitions, it therefore states again 'produced by the great elements', meaning that unmanifest form is produced by the great elements. 'Producing' has the meaning of cause; causes have five causes: first, producing cause; second, support cause; third, establishing [cause]; fourth, maintaining [cause]; and fifth, nourishing [cause]. These will be explained below.
