"And because it is said to be able to defile wisdom": this cites doctrinal authority as proof. As the sūtra states: "Greedy desire defiles the mind, preventing it from being liberated. Ignorance defiles wisdom, preventing it from being pure." Since this sūtra states that ignorance defiles wisdom, we know that the essence of wisdom is not ignorance. If ignorance were wisdom, how could the essence of wisdom defile wisdom itself? However, the essence of ignorance is the failure to comprehend the four truths, the Three Jewels, and wholesome and unwholesome karmas and their fruits; that is, it is a separate dharma that opposes comprehension. The Venerable Dharmatrāta said: "The essence of ignorance is the nature belonging to sentient beings that relies upon the self." Explanation: Ignorance arises relying on the self, which is of the class of the conceit of self (ātmamāna).
