Explanation: The first four lines demonstrate defilements through similes; the next two lines demonstrate karmic causes through similes; the final two lines demonstrate the resulting entities. 'Defilements are like seeds': just as sprouts, stems, and so forth arise from seeds, defilements, karma, and actual entities arise from defilements. 'Defilements are like dragons': just as a dragon dwelling in a pool keeps the water from ever drying up, defilements dwelling in karma induce fruits endlessly. 'Defilements are like grass roots': just as when grass roots are not pulled up, the shoots grow back after being cut, when the root of defilements is not pulled up, they arise again and again toward cessation. 'Like tree trunks': just as a tree trunk repeatedly puts forth branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits, from defilements arise repeatedly the afflictions, karma, and entities. 'And like husked grain': just as grain covered by husks can produce sprouts and so on, karma covered by defilements can induce further rebirths.
