Explanation: 'Sentient beings are maintained by food' presents the premise. The sūtra states that the World-Honoured One, having personally awakened to all dharmas, correctly understood and declared that all sentient beings, without exception, are maintained by food. There are four kinds of food: first, physical food (kavaḍīkārāhāra); second, contact (sparśa); third, volition (manosañcetanā); fourth, consciousness (vijñāna). There are two kinds of physical food: fine and gross. The fine is food for the intermediate existence of the desire realm, as scent serves as food; the food among the devas and of humans at the beginning of the kalpa is also called fine, because there is no excrement, as it disperses into the limbs and torso like oil poured into sand. Alternatively, fine sweat-parasites, infant food, and so forth are also called fine; that is, there are minute parasites in the body born from sweat, termed fine sweat-parasites.
