As for the latter four lines of the verse, they explain the establishment and exclusion of the foods. Question: "Since all defiled phenomena support and augment existence, why did the World-Honoured One say that food is only fourfold?" Answer: "Although that is so, it is spoken of as four in terms of their pre-eminence, without error." Question: "What is their pre-eminence?" Answer: The verse says, "The first two benefit this life: the basis and that which relies on it"—this explains the pre-eminence of the first two foods. "This life" refers to the present life. "The basis" refers to the body endowed with faculties; morsel food can provide benefit to it. "That which relies on it" refers to mind and mental factors; contact-food can provide benefit to them. In this way, these two foods possess the function of benefiting the already-born body and are the most pre-eminent.
