'Shape is also not substantially existent': the Sautrāntika school marks its refutation of the Sarvāstivāda view that physical shape is substantially existent. Therefore the treatise says: 'However, according to the Sautrāntika masters, shape is not substantially existent; that is to say, when a collection of color-matter arises predominantly on one side, long shape is designated nominally. In relation to this long shape, where another collection of color-matter arises sparsely on one side, short shape is designated nominally; where it arises extensively on all four sides, square shape is designated nominally; where it arises completely filling all places, circular shape is designated nominally. The remaining shapes should be understood accordingly (the remaining shapes refer to high, low, etc., which are all nominally designated). Just as seeing a firebrand moved swiftly and continuously in one direction leads one to call it long, and seeing it whirled around leads one to call it a circular shape, so shape has no distinct, substantial category of physical entity.'
