自性慚愧根者,根謂無貪等三善根及慚、愧二,此之五法體性是善,猶如良藥名自性善。

"By intrinsic nature, shame, modesty, and the roots": 'roots' refers to the three wholesome roots such as non-greed, as well as shame (hrī) and modesty (apatrāpya). The intrinsic nature of these five dharmas is wholesome, just like good medicine; they are called wholesome by intrinsic nature.
