釋曰：初句辨名，次三句明體。初律儀八種者，標也。一苾芻律儀；二苾芻尼律儀；三正學律儀，謂正學六法故（於五戒上，加不非時食也）；四勤策律儀，勤為大僧之所策勵，舊云沙彌；五勤策女律儀；六近事律儀；七近事女律儀；八近住律儀。如是八種總名第一別解脫律儀也。

Explanation: The first line distinguishes names; the next three lines clarify the entity. "The first discipline has eight varieties" introduces them: first, the bhikṣu discipline; second, the bhikṣuṇī discipline; third, the probationer (śikṣamāṇā) discipline, meaning correctly training in the six dharmas (adding not eating at improper times to the five precepts); fourth, the novice monk (śrāmaṇera) discipline, who diligently receives exhortation from the fully ordained saṅgha, formerly called shami; fifth, the novice nun (śrāmaṇerikā) discipline; sixth, the lay male follower (upāsaka) discipline; seventh, the lay female follower (upāsikā) discipline; eighth, the one-day precept (upavāsa) discipline. These eight kinds are collectively called the first, the Prātimokṣa discipline.
