'Through changing levels, falling away, and so forth' explains relinquishment through two conditions. 1. Relinquishing through changing levels: when born into a higher level from a lower level, one relinquishes the dharmas of the lower level; or when dying in a higher level and born into a lower level, one relinquishes the dharmas of the higher level. 2. Through falling away: when having obtained superior absorption, one falls back and loses it. The word 'and so forth' in the verse includes relinquishing the nikāyasabhāga, and also relinquishing a small portion of superior roots of good. 'A small portion of superior roots of good' refers only to the four [aids to penetration], Heat and so forth, which are called superior wholesome [dharmas]. If an ordinary worldling relinquishes them, they are relinquished at the time of death; whether born in that same level or born in a higher level, one relinquishes Heat and so forth. Since they are relinquished in that same level, it is not changing levels, because relinquishing by changing levels is only between higher and lower. This explains relinquishing the absorption vows through the above three conditions. Just as absorption of the form realm is relinquished through changing levels and falling away, relinquishing formless absorptions is also like this; the only difference from the form realm is that there are no vows.
