16.90

釋曰：要具四緣成離間語。染心壞他語者，此有四緣：一、染污心。二、發壞他語，若他壞不壞，皆成離間語。三、所聞者解所說義，相領解也。四者、不誤。後之二緣從前流來。

The explanation says: Four conditions must be met to constitute malicious speech. As for "speech that breaks another with a defiled mind," there are four conditions here: 1. A defiled mind. 2. Uttering speech to break another; whether the other is broken or not, it all constitutes malicious speech. 3. The hearer understands the meaning of what was said, being in mutual comprehension. 4. Being without error. The latter two conditions carry forward from the preceding.
