17.38

違經故非理者，破餘師說，此釋違經。《戒蘊經》中，觀象鬪等，世尊亦立在邪命中。邪受外境，虛容延命，故據此經文，但是貪生皆名邪命也。

Regarding "contradicts the sūtra and is therefore unreasonable": this refutes the explanation of the other masters, explaining that it contradicts the sūtra. In the *Śīlaskandha-sūtra*, watching elephant fights and the like are also established by the World-Honoured One as wrong livelihood. Improperly receiving external objects to vainly sustain life—therefore, based on the text of this sūtra, whatever arises from greed is termed wrong livelihood.
