The commentary says: There are six causes: Subsequent arising is the first cause, meaning having committed an offense, one proceeds to commit it again following the former. The field is the second cause, doing harm or benefit toward the four fields above. The fundamental is the third cause, meaning the fundamental course of action. Preparatory action is the fourth cause, meaning leading up to the fundamental, which is called preparatory action. Volition is the fifth cause, meaning through that volition the course of action is brought to culmination. Intention is the sixth cause, meaning the disposition of one's purpose: 'I shall perform such deeds,' and so on. First, from the intention, preparatory action is aroused; next, from preparatory action, volition is produced; next, from volition, the fundamental is triggered; this fundamental must arise in dependence upon the field; and only afterward does the subsequent arising become manifest. Here, following the logical order, we proceed from the later to the earlier.
