"Through their being inferior or superior, karma becomes of inferior or superior grade": because these previous six [factors] each have inferior and superior grades, karma comes to be of inferior or superior grade. Or there are some karmas that, among the previous six, become of superior grade solely through the aftermath, determinately establishing their ripening fruit in the aftermath. Or there are some karmas that become grave through the field, as when one performs karma in a field of benefactor-virtue it is grave, whereas when one performs karma towards other persons it is slight. Or there are some that, towards a field, become of superior grade through the force of the fundamental [act], and not through the other four; as when one commits murder towards parents the transgression is grave, whereas when one commits theft towards parents it is slight. As for the remaining three—preliminary, volition, and intention—their karma becoming of superior grade should be explained following the preceding. If all six causes are of superior grade, this karma is the gravest; reversed, it is the slightest; intermediate between these, karma is neither [the gravest] slight nor grave.
