18.16

無間一劫熟者，此必無間大地獄中一劫受苦，餘逆不必生無間獄。問：「若造多逆，皆次生熟，如何多逆同感一生？」答：「頌言隨罪增苦增，隨彼罪增苦還增劇，謂由多逆感地獄中多猛苦，具受二三四五倍重苦。」

"It ripens in the Avīci [hell] for one kalpa" means that this must undergo suffering for one kalpa in the Avīci Great Hell; the other acts of immediate retribution do not necessarily result in birth in the Avīci hell. Question: "If one commits multiple acts of immediate retribution, all of which ripen in the next life, how can multiple acts of immediate retribution jointly induce a single life?" Answer: "The verse says: 'as the sin increases, the suffering increases.' In accordance with the increase of that sin, the suffering also increases in severity. That is, due to multiple acts of immediate retribution, multiple intense sufferings in hell are induced, fully experiencing two, three, four, or five times the weight of suffering."
