Explanation: "At the beginning" means not long after the World-Honoured One turned the wheel of the Dharma. "At the end" means when the Buddha is about to enter parinirvāṇa. During these two times, because the Saṅgha is of one flavor, it cannot be broken. "Before the boil": "boil" means an ulcerous boil; heterodox morality is a boil on orthodox morality, and heterodox views are a boil on orthodox views. When the boil has not yet arisen, it is called "before the boil," because the split is only possible once the two boils have arisen. (The five dharmas are heterodox morality; slandering the eight noble paths as not the path is heterodox view.) "Before the pair": Maudgalyāyana was foremost in calming (śamatha); Śāriputra was foremost in insight (vipaśyanā); they were called the supreme pair. When the supreme pair of calming and insight had not yet arrived, it was called "before the pair." It requires them to reconcile the Saṅgha; by the nature of things, it is quickly reunited because of them.
