Explanation: Regarding 'schism is the greatest crime': Devadatta, knowing what was Dharma and what was non-Dharma, uttered false speech with the desire to cause a schism in the Sangha, which is the greatest sin. This is because it damages and destroys the Buddha's Dharmakāya and obstructs the worldly path to heavenly rebirth and liberation. That is to say, once the Sangha is divided, until it is reconciled, for everyone in the world, entry into the path, attainment of fruits, detachment from defilements, and the destruction of the outpourings are all blocked; practices such as cultivating absorption, reciting texts, and contemplation cease; the wheel of the Dharma does not turn in the trichiliocosm; and the bodies and minds of devas, humans, nāgas, and so forth are thrown into turmoil. Therefore, it incurs a ripening of one eon in the Avīci [hell]. Among the remaining four inexpiables: the fifth is the next heaviest, the third is next, the first is lighter, and the second is the lightest, because [the breach of] gratitude and so forth is less.
