The commentary says: 'Beginning with the nose' includes the tongue and body. These three can only grasp objects of equal magnitude. 'Equal magnitude' means that just as is the atomic size of the faculty, so is the atomic size of the object; because they correspond and unite, they produce the olfactory and subsequent consciousnesses. The eye and ear grasp objects of unfixed magnitude: the eye sometimes sees something small, such as the tip of a hair, sometimes sees something large, such as a mountain, and sometimes grasps something of equal size, such as seeing a grape. The ear's being unfixed means it grasps differences in magnitude, such as the sounds of mosquitoes, gnats, clouds, and lutes. 'Cloud sound' is thunder, which arises dependent on clouds; in the western regions thunder is called 'cloud sound'. The mind has no material obstruction, so differences in its shape or magnitude cannot be distinguished.
