Question: "If something is that which the mental consciousness relies upon, is it also an immediate condition for the mental consciousness? And if something is an immediate condition for the mental consciousness, is it also that which the mental consciousness relies upon?"
Answer: "One answers according to the former clause. That is, that which the mental consciousness relies upon is definitely an immediate condition for the mental consciousness, because that which the mental consciousness relies upon is precisely the mind faculty; hence it applies to both clauses. There are things that are immediate conditions for the mental consciousness but are not that which the mental consciousness relies upon: namely, the immediately perished mental-factors phenomenon element; because it is not a primary mind, it is not that which is relied upon.
According to the Mahāvibhāṣā, the methods for answering questions do not exceed four kinds: when asking from the narrow to the broad, one answers according to the former clause; when asking from the broad to the narrow, one answers according to the latter clause; when each has broad and narrow [aspects], one should make a fourfold proposition; if there is neither broad nor narrow, one answers, 'It is so.'
Now, taking the present question: 'If something is that which the mental consciousness relies upon, is it also an immediate condition?' This is asking from the narrow to the broad: that is, because that which the mental consciousness relies upon is only the primary mind, it is narrow; the immediate condition encompasses both primary mind and mental factors, so it is broad. 'Answering according to the former clause' means answering in accordance with the former question: that is, if it is that which the mental consciousness relies upon, it is definitely an immediate condition.
'Asking from the broad to the narrow and answering according to the latter clause' means modifying the previous question to say: 'If something is an immediate condition for the mental consciousness, is it also that which the mental consciousness relies upon?' Since this is asking from the broad to the narrow—that is, the immediate condition for the mental consciousness is broad because it encompasses both primary mind and mental factors, whereas that which it relies upon is narrow because it is only the primary mind—one should answer according to the latter clause: that is, if it is that which the mental consciousness relies upon, it must be an immediate condition, conforming to the latter clause.
If one poses a question concerning that which the eye-consciousness relies upon versus the immediate condition, this has mutual broad and narrow [aspects]: that is, that which the eye-consciousness relies upon is broad in that it encompasses both form and mind, but narrow in that it does not encompass mental factors; while the immediate condition is broad in that it encompasses both mind and mental factors, but narrow in that it does not encompass form."
