Explanation: The first line explains the matter to which one is bound; the subsequent seven lines explain the defilements that are capable of binding. The word 'unabandoned' in the second line and the words 'can bind' in the eighth line apply throughout the intermediate lines. To understand this verse, one must first know that anuśayas are twofold: first, specific characteristics, meaning that greed, hatred, and pride arise taking specific dharmas as objects, and are called specific characteristics. Second, common characteristics, meaning that views, doubt, and delusion arise taking many dharmas as objects, and are called common characteristics, taking objects with common characteristics. "If with respect to this matter" refers to the matter to which one is bound. "Unabandoned greed, hatred, and pride" are the defilements capable of binding. With respect to the matter bound, not having abandoned greed, hatred, and pride is called being capable of binding.
