The commentary explains: Afflictions arise in the present due to three causes and conditions: First, due to unabandoned latent defilements (anuśaya), which are the cause of the afflictions. Second, through the presence of corresponding objects; "corresponding" means in accordance with what is appropriate, as when greed arises toward an agreeable object, or hatred arises toward a disagreeable object, and so forth; this is the objective realm of the afflictions. Third, due to improper mental application (ayoniśo-manaskāra), which is the preparatory effort that arouses the afflictions. By means of these three causes, afflictions arise in the present.
