The treatise states: "The latent defilements and entanglements explained above are taught in the sūtras as effluents (āsrava), floods (ogha), yokes (yoga), and graspings (upādāna). The effluents refer to the three effluents: first, the effluent of desire (kāmāsrava); second, the effluent of existence (bhavāsrava); third, the effluent of ignorance (avidyāsrava). The floods refer to the four floods: first, the flood of desire (kāmaugha); second, the flood of existence (bhavaugha); third, the flood of views (dṛṣṭyogha); fourth, the flood of ignorance (avidyaugha). The yokes refer to the four yokes, which are explained in the same way as the floods. The graspings refer to the four graspings: first, grasping at sensual desire (kāmopādāna); second, grasping at views (dṛṣṭyupādāna); third, grasping at rules and observances (śīlavratopādāna); fourth, grasping at the doctrine of self (ātmavādopādāna).
