20.71

釋曰：微細者，釋隨眠義也。根本煩惱行相難知，故名微細，猶如眠也。二隨增已下，三義釋隨：且第一二隨增者，所緣隨增、相應隨增，能隨煩惱於所緣境，及所相應增昏滯故。隨逐者，第二釋隨義，煩惱起得，此煩惱得隨逐有情常為過患也。隨縛者，第三釋隨義，煩惱現行隨縛有情。

The commentary explains: "Subtle" explains the meaning of latent defilement (anuśaya). The mode of activity of the root afflictions is difficult to discern, hence they are called subtle, just like sleep (nidrā). From "increasing in two ways" onward, three meanings explain "following" (anu): First, "increasing in two ways" refers to increasing through the objective support and increasing through association, because the afflictions are able to increase stupor and sluggishness regarding their objective realms and their associated factors. "Pursuing" is the second explanation of the meaning of "following": when afflictions arise, their acquisition (prāpti) pursues sentient beings, constantly constituting a fault. "Binding along with" is the third explanation of the meaning of "following": when the afflictions are active in the present, they bind sentient beings.
