"Abiding, flowing, carrying away, joining, and holding fast" explains the names of the aforementioned effluents and so forth. "Abiding" means they can cause sentient beings to abide for a long time in saṃsāra. "Flowing" means they can cause sentient beings to circulate through the three realms. Because faults leak out inexhaustibly through the six sense doors, they are called "effluents" (āsrava). "Carrying away" means they drastically wash away wholesome factors, hence they are called "floods" (ogha). "Joining" means they bind sentient beings together to experience various sufferings, hence they are called "yokes" (yoga). "Holding fast" means they serve as the basis for the contaminated and seize hold of saṃsāra, hence they are called "graspings" (upādāna).
