Regarding "the root possesses five or eight": the Vibhāṣā masters say: "The fruits of the root dhyānas are only five, because the root stage is only able to permanently abandon the defilements of seeing and cultivation in the form and formless realms; therefore it has the three fruits of seeing the truths in the upper realms and the two fruits of abandonment by cultivation; because it cannot abandon the defilements of the desire realm, the four comprehensive knowledges of the desire realm are not fruits of the root." Regarding "or eight": the word "or" indicates the explanation of Master Ghoṣaka; he states that the root possesses eight fruits of comprehensive knowledge, adding the three fruits of comprehensive knowledge of seeing the truths of the desire realm to the previous five: namely, when one who previously detached from desire-realm defilement in the stage of an ordinary worldling later enters [the path of] seeing the truths relying on a root stage, with respect to what is abandoned by seeing the four truths bound to the desire realm, it is accepted that a distinct path induces undefiled acquisition. "Induced by a distinct path" refers to dharma-knowledge and dharma-patience. At the stage of this distinct path, the acquisition capable of attaining them arises, acquiring the three kinds of comprehensive knowledge of seeing the truths of the desire realm; therefore these three comprehensive knowledges of seeing the truths are also fruits of the root stage, excluding the [fetters] belonging to the lower tier, because [the exhaustion of] the lower-tier [fetters] is exclusively a fruit of the unarrived. This is because the path of seeing arising from a root stage cannot cultivate the antidote that abandons those defilements of cultivation of the desire realm; seeing and cultivation being different, it is not cultivated; therefore the comprehensive knowledge of the five lower-tier [fetters] is not a fruit of the root stage.
