問：「何須立此四聖種耶？」答：「頌言『三生具後業。』前三聖種助道生具，最後聖種助道事業，以諸弟子捨俗生具及俗事業，世尊哀愍，立此助聖道生具事業，令修行者解脫非久也。」

Question: "Why is it necessary to establish these four noble lineages?" / Answer: "The verse says: 'The three are requisites for living, the last is activity.' The first three noble lineages are requisites for living that assist the path; the last noble lineage is the activity that assists the path. Because the disciples have renounced worldly requisites for living and worldly activities, the World-Honoured One, out of compassion, established these requisites for living and activities that assist the noble path, so that practitioners may attain liberation before long."
