[As for] "The noble relinquish by losing the stage; ordinary beings, by the end of life": this explains the meaning of relinquishing. When a noble one relinquishes the four roots of goodness—Heat and the rest—it is by relinquishing through the loss of the stage. That is, relying on this stage one attains this root of goodness; if one migrates to a higher stage, this stage is then lost, and at the time when this stage is lost, the root of goodness is only then relinquished. If one dies in this stage and is reborn back into this stage, because one does not lose the stage, Heat and the rest are not relinquished. When an ordinary being relinquishes, it is solely through the end of life; whether an ordinary being loses or does not lose the stage, at the time when life ends, they inevitably relinquish Heat and the rest. This is because ordinary beings lack the capital of the path of seeing, and thus relinquish at the end of life.
