23.84

斷七八品至道類智，未起七八品勝果道故，但名一來果故，不名第三向也。斷上七地至道類智，未起七地勝果道故，名第三果故，不名第四向也。勝果道者，謂向道也。夫論向道，勝前果道，或趣後果，名勝果道。問：「何故前住果未得勝果道？」答：「以勝果道是向道故，故住果位，未起得也。」

Having abandoned seven or eight categories, upon reaching the subsequent cognition of the path, because one has not yet produced the path to the superior fruit of the seven or eight categories, one is only called a once-returner, and therefore not called an enterer upon the third [fruit]. Having abandoned the upper seven grounds, upon reaching the subsequent cognition of the path, because one has not yet produced the path to the superior fruit of the seven grounds, one is called the third fruit, and therefore not called an enterer upon the fourth [fruit]. The 'path to a superior fruit' refers to the path of an enterer. In discussion, the path of an enterer is superior to the path of the previous fruit, or because it tends toward a subsequent fruit, it is called the path to a superior fruit. Question: "Why has one who abides in the previous fruit not attained the path to a superior fruit?" Answer: "Because the path to a superior fruit is the path of an enterer, therefore in the stage of abiding in fruit, one has not yet produced or attained it."
