As for 'its accomplishment is through the mixing of single moments': the accomplishment of mixed dhyāna is through the mixing of single moments. That is, an arhat or an anāgāmin must first enter the fourth dhyāna, where multiple moments of uncontaminated [mind] present themselves in succession; from this, multiple moments of contaminated [mind] are induced; after that, multiple moments of uncontaminated [mind] again present themselves. Rotating back and forth in this way, the subsequent ones gradually decrease, down to the final two moments of uncontaminated [mind]. Next, two moments of contaminated [mind] are induced and presented, followed immediately by the arising of two moments of uncontaminated [mind]—this is called the complete fulfillment of the preparatory stage of mixed dhyāna cultivation. Next, there is only a single moment of uncontaminated [mind], which then induces a single moment of contaminated [mind], followed immediately by the arising of a single moment of uncontaminated [mind]. With the contaminated [mind] in between and the uncontaminated [mind] before and after intermixed with each other, it is therefore called mixed cultivation. This mixing of single moments is called the accomplishment of the fundamental [state]. Having cultivated the fourth, by the momentum of this, one is also able to cultivatively mix the lower three dhyānas.
