Explanation: Regarding "the minds that produce apparitions are fourteen, fruits of absorption, two up to five": there are altogether fourteen apparition-minds produced from the supernormal power of the domain of psychic transformation. That is, the fruit of the first absorption has two; the fruit of the second absorption has three; the fruit of the third absorption has four; the fruit of the fourth absorption has five. Based on the first dhyāna, there are two apparition-minds: first, that included in the desire realm, meaning the first dhyāna produces a desire-realm apparition; second, that included in the first dhyāna, meaning the first dhyāna produces a first-dhyāna apparition. The second dhyāna has three apparition-minds: the two kinds as before, plus an apparition of the second dhyāna. The third dhyāna has four apparition-minds: the three kinds as before, plus an apparition of the third dhyāna. The fourth dhyāna has five apparition-minds: the four kinds as before, plus an apparition of the fourth dhyāna. The apparition-minds of the fruits are based on their own or a higher stage; they are never based on a lower [stage]. For instance, an apparition of the first dhyāna based on the first dhyāna is called [based on] its own [stage], and based on the second dhyāna, etc., it is called [based on] a higher [stage]. Apparitions of the second dhyāna, etc., are not based on the first dhyāna, so none are based on a lower [stage]. Absorption-minds of a lower stage do not produce higher fruits because their potency is inferior.
