Regarding "arising as two from the pure and from themselves": "the pure" refers to wholesome dhyāna; "themselves" refers to the apparition-mind. This mind that produces apparitions arises from two: first, arising from the pure; second, arising from itself. Moreover, this apparition-mind can give rise to two minds: namely, producing the pure mind and producing the apparition-mind. That is, when one emerges from dhyāna to produce the apparition-mind, this mind definitely cannot directly emerge from meditative absorption. First, from the pure stage of concentration, the initial apparition-mind arises; subsequently, later apparition-minds arise from apparition-minds of their own kind; and the final apparition-mind turns back to give rise to the pure absorption. Therefore, this apparition-mind arises from two minds and can give rise to two minds.
