The explanation says: As for 'after the undefiled, the wholesome arises, above and below up to the third,' following an undefiled samāpatti, wholesome ones arise, reaching up to the third stage above and below; because of distance, none can skip to generate the fourth. The word 'wholesome' completely subsumes both the pure and the undefiled. As for 'above and below up to the third': for instance, immediately following the first dhyāna, six arise, namely the pure and the undefiled of its own first dhyāna, of the second dhyāna, and of the third dhyāna. Immediately following the sphere of nothingness, seven arise, namely its own stage, the lower sphere of consciousness and the sphere of space, each having pure and undefiled, and above, the peak of existence, which has only pure samāpatti. Immediately following the second dhyāna, eight arise, namely its own stage, the upper third dhyāna and fourth dhyāna, each having pure and undefiled, together with the lower first dhyāna's pure and undefiled. Immediately following the sphere of infinite consciousness, nine arise, namely its own stage and the lower sphere of space, the fourth dhyāna, each having pure and undefiled, together with the upper sphere of nothingness's pure and undefiled, and the peak of existence's pure only. Immediately following the third and fourth dhyānas and the immaterial sphere of space, ten arise, namely eight above and below, together with the two of their own stage.
