次破數論，難言：「決定有我，事用必待事用者故，謂如識等能了等用，必待有我以為所依，識等方能有了等用，能了之者即是我也。如天授行，必待天授，天授是我，行即事用，故知事用必待於我。」

Next, refuting the Sāṃkhya. They object, saying: "A self definitely exists, because activity necessarily depends on an agent of activity. For example, the activities of consciousness and the like, such as cognizing, necessarily depend on having a self as their basis before consciousness and the like can possess activities such as cognizing. That which is capable of cognizing is precisely the self. Just as Devadatta's walking necessarily depends on Devadatta—Devadatta being the self and walking being the activity—so we know that activity necessarily depends on a self."
