The commentary states: 'Dharmas of the three time periods each have three' is the section on the three time periods. The acquisitions of the dharmas of the three time periods each have three kinds: past dharmas have past acquisitions, future acquisitions, and present acquisitions; likewise, future and present dharmas each have three kinds of acquisitions. Now, past dharmas having past acquisitions may be prior to the dharma, simultaneous with the dharma, or posterior to the dharma. This is spoken with respect to the acquiring and the acquired dharmas both being in the past period at the present time. However, past dharmas may have only one acquisition, like what arises from maturation in the past period; or they may have two acquisitions, like the prātimokṣa vows of the past period; or they may extend to three acquisitions, like the vows concomitant with the path in the past period. Whether having one acquisition, two acquisitions, or three acquisitions, all are named past acquisitions among past dharmas; thus, past acquisitions extend to three kinds of acquisitions; one should contemplate this well. As for the present acquisitions belonging to past dharmas, when the prātimokṣa vows have elapsed into the past, they are not lost in the present, and an acquisition arises to acquire them. In this case, the dharma is in the past, while the acquisition abides in the present; because the acquisition abides posterior to the dharma, the present acquisition belonging to a past dharma is solely an acquisition posterior to the dharma. As for the future acquisitions belonging to past dharmas, the dharma is past, while the acquisition is in the future. This future acquisition is named an acquisition posterior to the dharma; viewing horizontally across the time periods, although they are all posterior to the dharma, if spoken with respect to the sequence of their functional activity arising, the future also has an acquisition prior to the dharma belonging to a past dharma. For example, the vows concomitant with the path in the past period have acquisitions prior to the dharma that have already elapsed into the past, yet the types of those acquisitions prior to the dharma are numerous, and those whose arising has not been exhausted still abide as future acquisitions. If this future acquisition does not arise, that is all; but if it does arise, it must precede that past dharma; thus, future acquisitions of past dharmas also include acquisitions prior to the dharma; one should contemplate this well. Past acquisitions belonging to present dharmas are only acquisitions prior to the dharma. Present acquisitions among present dharmas are only acquisitions simultaneous with the dharma. Future acquisitions belonging to present dharmas are named acquisitions posterior to the dharma. Viewing horizontally across time periods, although they are all posterior to the dharma, if one discusses the priority of the arising of functional activity, the future also has an acquisition prior to the dharma belonging to a present dharma; this should be understood by analogy with the past, and contemplated well. Past and present acquisitions belonging to future dharmas are only acquisitions prior to the dharma. Future acquisitions belonging to future dharmas may be prior to the dharma, simultaneous with the dharma, or posterior to the dharma. Although there is no sequential order of prior and posterior in the future, with respect to the distinct types of acquisitions, their being prior and posterior is spoken of in terms of their capacity to activate their functions.
