Question: "Why is it named the 'desire realm' and so on?" Answer: "'Realm' is the general name, and 'desire' and the others are specific [names]. Applying the specific to the general, it is named 'desire realm' and so forth. Fully stated, one should say 'the realm belonging to desire is called the desire realm; the realm belonging to form is called the form realm; the realm belonging to the formless is called the formless realm.' Omitting the word 'belonging to,' they are simply named 'desire realm' and so forth. It is like saying 'black pepper drink' or 'diamond ring': 'drink' and 'ring' are both general names, while 'black pepper' and 'diamond' are specific designations; applying the specific to the general, they are called 'black pepper drink' and 'diamond ring.' Fully stated, one should say 'the drink belonging to black pepper' and 'the ring belonging to diamond'; omitting the word 'belonging to,' they are simply named 'black pepper drink' and so forth. The case of the dharmas may be understood by this analogy."
