Commentary: The first two lines resolve the objection; the latter two lines identify the essential nature. Tradition states that conceptualization is broadly of three kinds: 1. conceptualization of intrinsic nature (svabhāva-vikalpa), 2. deliberative conceptualization (abhinirūpaṇā-vikalpa), and 3. recollective conceptualization (anusmaraṇa-vikalpa). Because the five consciousness-bodies, although possessing intrinsic nature [conceptualization], lack the other two, the śāstra says: "Just as a one-legged horse is called legless, so the sūtras say that they are without conceptualization." As for conceptualization of intrinsic nature, its essential nature is vitarka alone, which will be explained below among the mental factors.
